Other Gardening News (K-Z) (30)I'm closing this blog because I feel I have become lost with it. I have gone so far off track that I feel that I need a fresh start. A fresh face. So though I am closing girlgonegardening, I will not be gone... Mr. Hyper HATES hypocrites. Mr. Hyper is one of those brutally honest people, too honest sometimes. Recently, he became angry with a friend who showed a hypocritical side and now will have nothing to do with them, which makes me sad... There is nothing quite so divine as finding a very good wild apple tree loaded with fruit. Fruit with yellow green skin, blushed with red. Crispy, crunchy, refreshingly flavorful and juicy. Add to the mix that it holds up well in baking, had no worms in all the ones I picked, and I cannot be anything but extremely thankful and happy for the bounty... can't get any more local then this! Today we will be eating almost exclusively from our garden. Involved in dinner will be: garlic (harvested about a month ago)just dug Yukon potatoesjust harvested cabbagejust picked cornjust picked tomatoesjust snipped parsleyIn the dehydrator, I have tomatoes drying now... Great White Tomatoes, an heirloom variety, gets quite big. The size of big brandy wines at least. If the weather is stable, there is no cat facing and they look quite pretty. They aren't any good for cooking with in my opinion but on a cheese sandwich with mayo and pickles they are delicious... The sad results of my giant pumpkin experiment is in. My pumpkin weights a sad 48 lb.s I have a cabbage that's heavier. Serious. What do I do with a lot of cabbage? Well I wasn't sure having not grown up in a very cabbage-y environment, the only thing I really knew about cabbage was cole slaw, which I detest... Well, looks like I've lost this competition! How are you doing, Christine? My vines were healthy, glorious and monstrous. There was a lot of promising pumpkins. then in a mater of weeks, the vines are dead... 74*, 30" and steady barometer, 68% humidity, NW 10 mph wind, partly cloudy On a day it actually cools off with a breeze, our power was finally restored. I was delighted this morning when it came on at about 6:30 am... One thing I've learned from this event, is that having some "extras" in my emergency stash would make this experience just a bit less uncomfortable. For instance, trying to sleep in a hot humid home without even a stir of air coming through the windows is VERY UNCOMFORTABLE... You may have seen some of the scary pictures on the news of last nights storms in Northwest Indiana. I have no idea if they have mentioned anything as I have NO POWER in my home but from what I've seen I am sure there must be some coverage... I know I don't always keep up with the blog like I should in the summer, but I really do have my hands full right now, and here is proof! 5 kittens, 4 weeks old tomorrow. This morning, when checking out the now monstrous giant pumpkin plants, I noticed not one, not two, not three, but FOUR Pumpkins just beginning... I borrowed my neighbors digi camera for a few minutes to take some pictures. enjoy! Daylillies in full bloom. Rugosa rosa seedlings. Mix of flowers that just reseeded themselves. I got up earlier then normal by about an hour because Brandi was being obnoxious and not letting any of us sleep... In all we got a half an inch only but I was glad to get that much! It's been a very dry year for this little spot of Indiana for a change... First, the drives decided to not work due to some kind of corruption in the registry but once that was fixed the monitor decided that enough was enough and ended it all... I had some like it last year and I am glad that color reseeded... Red Poppies, Nicotiana, Herbs and Crafts 78*, feels like 80*, 30.06" and steady barometer, 60% humidity, S 6 mph wind, partly cloudy The first of the annual poppies are blooming! Red ones, which is fine by me. I love red in the garden (just not on me, wearing red makes me look like a tomato as my skin tends to reflect the red... 68*, feels like 69*, 30.1" and rising barometer, 81% humidity, S 6 mph wind, fair If plants can be "cute" what cuteness do you have in your garden right now?
